Hey guys,
I want to get a static/noise sound to whoosh across the speakers, left to right etc. I know it is probably a simple effect and i've messed about with other stereo style trickeries but can't get anywhere near the effect i'm after. Is there a specific machine/method that's good for this?

I can't check nool's example, since I don't have Buzz at work, so maybe he already did this for you, but here are my thoughts on creating a whoosh...

You're probably looking for something that produces a doppler effect in addition to volume/panning changes. One of the 3Dizer effects should be able to do this (there's Ynzn's and then another, which I think is a little better, but I can't remember). Move the sound source across the space so that it passes right by the listener, and you should get a wooshing effect. The panning effect of a 3Dizer may only really show up on headphones (since it relies on ear-to-ear delays), so you might need to do a little playing with the channels to make it noticeable on speakers. A little reverb never hurt anyone, either.

I can also imagine doing all this "by hand" with peer control of a couple of gains and delays. A filter that cuts out the highs when the sound is "further away" would also help make the whoosh more dramatic. I might try this when I get home. How YOU doin?

The noise that you use is pretty important, too. I assume that you'll want something that has a hefty amount of low frequencies in it - something like pink or brown noise, maybe. But that'll depend on exactly what you're looking for, I guess.

ok...sounds good. I'm a little green on a lot of the effects/technical lingo, so this'll give me a good chance to play around and learn something. Not 100% sure what a peer control is, but i'm sure it'll explain itself.

Thanks guys, i'll get whooshing
