So I was messing around with some effects while under the influence and somehow found myself playing with vocoders. I ended up with something like this:

909->vocxp[mod]
HD Ultra6->vocxp[carrier]

The 909 was just playing some groove, the Ultra was playing a bassline (t0m level baze 3 preset if it matters.) Turn carrier and mod through to 0. Turn the bands down low. Bandwidth should be turned up a bit. Play with the decay. Instant groove!

I also tried the same experiment with Amen instead of 909, and one where the 909 was modulating the Amen which was modulating the bassline. It has a really neat effect if you alter the decay while it's playing.

Another something fun is:

pad -> outupt
pad -> vocxp[carrier] -> some kind of evolving filter -> output
drums -> out
drums -> vocxp[mod]

Play a few loops of the pad w/o the drums (or mute the vocxp input w/ champ) then turn on the beats.

If anyone wants a demo, I can upload a bmx soonish.

this concept caught me as well a few months ago, dunno why i stopped (probably because i suck most of the time, the concept is definitely not to blame). absolutely a very powerful technique, if you did not try it until now, don't wait another day, make cool sounds now

whenever I program shaker parts, it's almost always just a noise gen into a vocoder being modulated by a drum loop. It just sounds 10x more natural than anything I could sequence, even with good shaker samples.

That's a good point, lykwydchykyn. I've got a flasbox patch to do something similar, though it's not exactly a shaker sound.

I'll post a demo tomorrowish. I've had quite the busy weekend.

i've played around with running all sorts of stuff through vocxp, and there's definitely some fun to be had. works great for textural parts, and running, say, rhythm gated synths through it. that sort of thing. nice weird sweepy sounds and stuff like that.

Bah, I'm a terrible person. I should have posted a BMX or three by now. I still have a few ready. Moving has left me without a connection at home for the time being. This is largely why I haven't really published or posted much lately...

In the meantime, I did discover that it's downright great for filter effects, too. I like something choral for the carrier (run this dry through a different chain as well) and then a drum loop through the mod. Then put a filter (blue filter virus preset is fun) on the vocoder output.

With vocoderXP just plug both carrier and modulator into the same vocoderxp

Damn, I let this drop while I went away on depression. I still have that BMX somewhere, I should get around to posting it to buzzmusic.de.

Anyway, like mirf said, use vocoderxp, it's sexier. I have a template saved with 2 champs, one plugged into the modulator, one into the carrier for ease of use. I highly recommend it.
