My guide to music theory's been updated after more than a year to version 0.4.2 - now with double the amount of chords including the full suite of sevenths and ninths with comments on each and revised diagrams, a new section on cadences, a bibliography, and material added on arranging and structure.

EDIT: Now it's up to 0.5.1 _________________ is ravenspiral.com, is good

The diagram for 3.3.1.10 isn't correct (you put Gb instead of G).
(wow, that's great work overall) _________________ wayfinder |

Very good work! |

hey kwooky.. excellent. again. small suggestion? on the areas regarding the construction of scales, like the majors, etc:
| Quote: | So every major scale has that pattern of whole tones and semitones to it: two whole tones, a
semitone, three whole tones, a semitone and you’re back to the same note you started on. That’s what
makes them major scales. By starting at different notes like D or F# and rising up the scale with the
same pattern you can derive any major scale you need. |
This might be a bit more clear w/ the graphics if you described it using 'steps' instead of 'tones' and instead explained whole/half steps. of course keep the whole/semi explaination too tho.
for example, if you look at the D major scale and use that description while looking at it (the reference picture) it could be a bit confusing to some as it appears when counting the 'tones' that it doesnt add up unless u ignore the root. if you look at it via steps then it makes some more sense (D - E = 1 whole step, E - F# = 2nd whole step, if you look at it in tones I can see some ppl going "wtf? why not F?, it's a semi tone from E??").
anyways, i hate to make any suggestions really because this is a such a great tutorial you've written for people. i know if i had no understanding of any theory whatsoever that I would absolutely praise your efforts as something on the spiritual level
Even with what I do know, your descriptions of chording and progressions is extremely valuable and written in that "certain air" that makes it so much easier to further beat into memory.
k-bird = 10/10 on the mute-o-meter. _________________ http://www.lazytrap.com/ |
