Hi, I've been using Buzz for about a month now, making some House beats. The hardest thing for me so far is to get the drums sounding interesting. I like drums that are constantly changing, with lots of little fills and breaks and glitches. My drums sound pretty boring to me. They sound mechanical. I add a cymbal here and there, a little changeup before the breaks, but it doesn't seem to be enough.
So, the question is, have you got any tips for programming drums you wouldn't mind sharing? I've avoided using any samples, but would that be the way to go for that glitchy, stuttered sound? |

yep and yep
velocity, note cut, note delay, offset
play with these until your fingers are bleeding
in matilde - EC, ED, 09
in utracker - u get ur own column
sgrid has em too
in fact, some of the older trackers have em too
combinations of these provide those 'ghost hits' 'fills' 'breaks' or whatever other term is thrown around like yesterdays dinner
i use mainly only samples
u can investiage buzz machines to produce nice drum hits which is possible but is time consuming
if u need samples ->

I mostly use samples/trackers, but I also use Fudum3 _alot_. In fact, most of my presets for Fudrum3 are multi-voiced, and named like:
"kit -> k-h-s-h" etc. (kick hat snare hat). I put some of these presets @ buzzmachines. Fudrum3 is great for those "glitchy" sounds that you were asking about, and not only that but it's easy to export the sounds to the wavetable so you can use them in other trackers or samplers or whatever.
here's a how-to i wrote for fudrum3 when it came out so ppl wouldn't over-look this feature:
1) after adding Fudrum3, add 2 or 3 more tracks
2) loop a simple pattern with a note in each track then design
your sound for each track on Fudrum's paramter window
3) right click on fudrum3, select your options and press ok
4) Goto the wavetable, there's your wavs.. use another drum machine, sample or tracker, or whatever.
..btw, there are alot of slick kick generators for buzz such as FSM Kick, FSM Kick XP, etc. check em out. Also, don't limit yourself to using samples or drum synths, look at the odd synths or even regular ones to create yourself some nice glitched out stuff. I personally like all the Ruff synths for that.. _________________ http://www.lazytrap.com/ |

| try using a resampler effect, trying changing the eq during the track, try using some hi pass filters with some res and maybe even an expressive filter or wah filter with an lfo connected to a delay with a hi pass filter on three, four or six ticks. try the rymix flaser box for the cymbals and hi hats. distort the bass drum. |

a thing i learned from my host is using a type of distortion on snares and hihats .
joachims mars2 is great for this, since it affects the sound almost drastically . if your drum output is at a normal level (say, not too much over 0db), try the 3rd and the 4th distortion mode, and play a bit with the other parameters . gives a nice warm sound to the stuff .
be sure to have one distortion for each, the snare and the hats, so you have more individual control of them, for this you will have to use one gen for each sound type . unless you want them both to interfere each other and rout both into one distortion or just use one gen for all . that also can get an interesting sound .
also you might want to try a flanger/chorus effect on the snares and maybe on the hats . fsm phatman is great for this, but make sure to try it also with others . try it once before and once after the distortion to see what fits your need better .
my master told me once not to touch vst or samples, but i am a bastard and use some from time to time . and he would kill me if he knew i am back anyway .
but sincerely, with tricks like this, you might really not need any samples . _________________ error. no, not idm!!! ERROR! |
