arclight and I were just talking about sidechain compression, using automation mark II compressor, to duck pads behind bass drum sounds. This is a topic that seems to come up a bit. This is a realy sloppy way to try and explain it. Enjoy.

**************
<arclight_> yeah
<Inductive> first, the level automationII doesn't output any sound, so lp it realy hard before the automationII. Set that autom to level, then run your pad or whatever into another automblah and set it to audio... pump the ratio like all the way up, threshold down (play with this one) and attack/release pretty low... run your pads through that second one
<Inductive> sometimes the first time you set the machines up you have to jiggle the mode slider in each one so it 'catches'. you never have to do it again though, not even loading it... (who knows)
<arclight_> do the two comps have to be connected together?
<Inductive> no
<arclight_> aha, the jiggling the slider was my problem
<Inductive> break->AutomationII(set to level)->master (also Break->Master) and ... Pad->AutomationII(Set to audio)->master
<Inductive> yeah... that fucked me up like the first 10 times i used it... i should post that somewhere
<arclight_> the level comp shouldn't be outputting audio, should it?
<Inductive> no
<arclight_> *_*
<Inductive> which is why i usualy put a lp filter before it, so the snare wont duck the pads
<arclight_> well, it's outputting audio
<Inductive> then, just run the beat to your eq and whatever then master
<Inductive> level should not... jiggle it again
<arclight_> ok
<arclight_> yeah it works now

*****************

In closing

Pads -> AutomationMrkII(Audio Mode) -> Master

Drums -> LPFilter -> AutoMrkII(Level More) -> Master

Drums -> Whater effects you want -> Master

Jiggle all the mode sliders in the compressors... Enjoy...

yeah, thanks for enlightening me, inductive. i was actually using it to duck my bass behind the kick to clean up my low end... worked like a charm.
