Whenever I get stuck trying to come up with a name of a song I end up listening to it over and over until a name comes to me. Most of the time this doesn't happen, the song name just pops out while I'm working on a track.
What helps you come up with song titles? _________________ http://pemdasi.net |

For the most part, the same thing happens to me. Usually I'm able to find out what the song is saying.
When I'm on the spot for a name (i.e. must save NOW) and don't have one, I'll type in some gibberish that happens to be (barely) pronouncable. Sometimes this is pleasing enough to be retained. That's actually how I got my nick... I wrote a mod, saved it (as farq.it) and it stuck in my head. I was looking for a new nick at the time... so... _________________ - farq

Yeah I just come up with a work in progress title, something that will remind me what the track sounds like.
Can't say I really bother naming them properly. |

I think that's how I do it as well: Listen to the song until something good appears in my brain. I usually go for short song titles. When I'm saving the file, I just use increasing numbers for the increasing savestates in a directory named after the day and the number of songs i started on that day, so I'll have a dir called 20040909-01 with files 001.bmx, 002.bmx, 003.bmx etc. No need for names at that stage, although I sometimes do come up with something silly. Usually, the first naming starts when I'm giving out previews.
When I was still using IT, it was different, I just used made-up words that came to my mind back then. I have a lot of songs that are named polopo.it or piloko.it or booooo.it etc , they got renamed in time for their releases _________________ wayfinder |

EXACTLY!
What is it with Impulse Tracker and that? I know a few people that do that, and those examples you gave are exactly the kinds of names I'd use... except that my names were usually made of mostly characters on the left side of the keyboard... yours seem to be on the right (unless you've got a far different layout than mine.) _________________ - farq

my song titles come from either what the song is about, or they are meant to imply lyrics that don't exist. yes, it's pretentious and arty, and no, i don't give a fuck what you think. _________________ --

my song titles usually tend to come from deeply rooted issues , thoughts, concerns, etc. I tend to usually keep it vague tho. Othertimes its humor or the first thing that comes to mind.
my filenames on the other hand usually come from a random keyboard attack by my fingers followed by the Enter key. ASDGFSDJIoEWRGFE.bmx
Often I forget to rename the bmx to the song name that I pick (which is what the .wav and .mp3s, etc get labeled). This wrecks havok when i need to rerecord or multitrack the song later on. I organize my song files into semi-monthly folders and subcategories in those so its usually pretty easy to dig something out. _________________ http://www.lazytrap.com/ |

I use names that might describe what instruments or what style the song is. Jacinthbeat 2 or something hehe.
When I release it, I try to find a name that fits the mood of the song. _________________ www.xenobioz.com

jesus mute, it's like you read my mind and quoted it, heh.
my song titles usually come from mis-reading things, or mis-reading things on purpose. (if they're not completely straightforward due to pre-determined concepts) The Exercise Song has since become Exercise Dog because my pals in the FABULOUS band Golden Axe heard it as that, and the live version has dogs barking in it.
Lunar Driver I got off "Learner Driver" - and was one of the tracks where I had the title before I started writing the song (that happens usually on a 50/50 basis, heh) _________________ NEW_ATOM / DISASTERADIO http://disasteradio.org || http://myspace.com/disasteradio |

So what do you do, if you have a song that you wrote while you were having issues with a particular person. You really like the lyrics to the song, but they contain her name. You have to avoid using her name, but the rhyme scheme is very dependent on this particular name. You meet another person with the same name, but the first person could easily make the claim that the song was about her and this somthing that we nee to avoid.
So how do you all feel about using people's names/handles/login ID's and such as monikers for songs? |

Well certainly, I could just use a different persons name, or write a different song, and keep the same name.
I suppose my point was that the name and the song together were important.
What about Jen, could Jed interpret the replacement name as slander? |

STAGE 1: when saving the bmx for the first time, i usually save it as quick as possible to r:\, giving it either a date, something that i plan it to become or something that relates to the content of the track - and mostly to the feeling i have while being on the groove trip. here are some examples:

great huh? then there is STAGE 2, where i write down the .wav to disk, to show off a preview or give some first impressions, where i use pretty much the same scheme.
finally, STAGE 3. a final wav has been written for post production. this time
- i listen to the track until i have an association with the track that fits (BOOOOORRRRIIIING)
- i pick something from my chamber of religious words(tm), a section inside my mind that has formed through repetitive drug abuse
- i name it after something i talked with people on IRC (e.g. occams razor, after someone explained the term to me) or current world events.
- i pick something from my digibrain.txt, which is a file gathering all kind of chaotic organized information that i randomly need access to. i have a section "cool song names i want to use", where i pick one if i'm in the mood for it. i usually write titles there when i'm on irc and have a good idea for a title, but no track.
and then, finally, months later, i search for the fucking bmx...
